Abstract

1486779 Water detection EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 23 Dec 1974 [2 Jan 1974] 55376/74 Heading G1S An apparatus for water detection, particularly in aviation fuel, comprises an evacuated vial 12 containing a water sensitive composition and sealed by a pierceable closure, and a receptacle 14 for receiving the vial, the receptacle being provided with a cannula 21 which pierces the closure to allow a test liquid to be drawn into the vial. The receptacle stands in a container 10 and has a slot 16a to allow passage of test liquid to the lower end of the cannula. The water sensitive composition may comprise a finely divided solid having a surface area of 4 to 9m<SP>2</SP>/g and selected from calcium carbonate, barium carbonate, barium sulphate, magnesium carbonate and mixtures thereof, and ground fuchsia dye having a particle size of 44 to 74 microns, the weight ratio of solid to dye being in the range 20 to 10,000, and the mixture being sealed in the vial immediately after grinding of the dye.
