Abstract

1486768 Granulating by agglomeration DEJ INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH CO BV 17 Sept 1974 [18 Sept 1973] 43682/73 Heading B5A A rotary agglomerating pan 12 having a stepped rim has triangular cross-section inserts fitted in one or more of the steps to prevent the larger particles in the steps from travelling too far up the rim before falling back. A similar insert may be fitted into the base of the pan. Preferably the angle # of the insert is chosen, in keeping with the angle α at which the plane of rotation of the pan is inclined and with the frictional interaction between the moist granules and the surface of the inserts so that the granules will roll down before they pass the highest point of step and will roll down without acceleration. The height to depth ratio of each step may be constant or it may vary to suit the changing moisture content and size of the granules as they move outwards. Coffee or tea powder is fed by a screw feeder 13 and water or an emulsion are sprayed by a plunger pump 15 through an atomizing nozzle 16 into the rotating pan. Granules fall from the edge of the pan into a hot air fluidized bed drier 20.
