Abstract

1276437 Instant coffee agglomerates GENERAL FOODS Ltd 28 April 1971 [28 April 1970] 20474/70 Headings A2B and A2E A free-flowing soluble agglomerated powder of instant coffee is prepared by forming into clusters milled soluble coffee particles having a bulk density before milling of 0.05-0.18 gm/cc and a residual moisture content of 2-7 wt %, feeding the clusters into a zone wherein they are moistened and heated, for example by steam, whereby an agglomerated granular powder is formed, and drying. The product preferably has a bulk density of 0.22-0.34 gm/cc, at least 40 wt % of the particles being larger than 40 mesh B.S., having a colour of 28-50 Lumetron units, and a comparative hardness of less than 10%, the agglomerated particles being granular chips with substantially regular faces. The clusters may be formed by feeding the particles in sufficient depth into a vibrating distributor box wherein they are compacted. The feed stock may be prepared from a foamed extract, for example by spray drying, and the milling is preferably effected with chilling. The milled powder preferably has a bulk density of 0.23-0.33gm/cc.
