Abstract

Steam, returning to boiler.-Steam taken from a low-pressure boiler 1, Fig. 1, is compressed in a pump, passed through a superheater 5, and acts expansively in a reciprocating engine or a turbine 7. The exhaust is returned direct to the boiler 1 through a pipe 10, or, if the exhaust pressure is too high, an automatically-controlled valve 11 causes it to pass first through a condenser or cooler 9. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, lowpressure steam is led to the cylinder 3, and is compressed during the return stroke and forced into a superheater 4; during the next forward stroke it expands through pipe 8 directly, or through a condenser or cooler 7, to the boiler 1.
