Abstract

148,667. Johnson & Phillips, and Porteous, D. A. S. May 23, 1919. Cables and compound conductors.-The strands of a conductor A, Fig. 1, laid with a long lay in the same direction, are insulated with paper, &c., B, a pair of such conductors being then laid together, preferably with the same direction and length of lay as each conductor, and are drawn through a series of progressively smaller circular dies so as to compress the conductor to the form shown in Fig. 2 without appreciable elongation, before the outer lead or other covering is applied. To form a multi-core cable, each pair of conductors is sheathed with paper, &c., C, and the pairs are then laid together, preferably with the same direction of lay as the individual wires, the cable being drawn through a similar series of dies to produce the form shown in Fig. 3, after which insulation D and a lead or other cover E is applied. Worming F may be applied within the envelopesfor each pair and for the completed cable.
