Abstract

1485648 Atomizers EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 14 Nov 1974 [22 Nov 1973 30 Aug 1974 (2)] 49273/74 Heading F4T An atomizer for combustible material which is a liquid e.g. organic sluge comprises a feed tube 1 for the combustible material and a coaxial feed tube 2 for auxiliary gas, e.g. methane or compressed air or steam under pressure and, in the atomization region, a series of stationary helical components 4 for dividing the flow into partial streams and recombining them. The components 4 are planar members with one edge rotated through 180 degrees (apart from the end one which is cut short and rotated through 135 degrees) with adjacent edges located at 90 degrees to each other and with the twist going in opposite directions. The components may be of equal length (20 mm.) or a combination of 20 mm. lengths and 200 mm. lengths may be used. The orifice area of the nozzle 9 may be adjusted by a needle. The nozzle 7, which may be non-integral with the tube 6, may be divergent, cylindrical or may comprise several divergent cylindrical apertitres. A further feed pipe for a secondary fuel may be incorporated. Typical delivery rates for such an atomizer are 700kg./hour sludge, 200 kg./hour fuel oil and 50kg./hour steam.
