Abstract

1485397 Pipe joints WINN & COALES (DENSO) Ltd 17 Nov 1975 [20 Nov 1974] 50270/74 Heading F2G A pipe, wire or cable 1 is slidably and fireresistantly sealed within a barrier 2 by the method of adhering to the pipe a water resistant adhesive tape, e.g. as disclosed in Specification 761,402 or membrane 4 where the pipe passes through the barrier and then applying a chemically curable adhesive composition 6 at each end of the tape so that when cured it fills the space between the pipe 1 and the barrier 2 and allows the pipe to slide without breaking the seal. Packing 5 may be used to centralize the pipe 1. A sleeve 3, e.g. of metal, may be sealed within the opening in the barrier 2. The adhesive tape 4 preferably incorporates a backing sheet which forms a strong bond with the curable composition 6 and to this end may be embossed. A suitable backing sheet is flame resistant and may comprise plasticized or unplasticized P.V.C., chloroprene rubber, polyvinylidene chloride film, chlorosulphonated polyethylene film, plastics coated paper, textile material, plain or paper-laminated aluminium foil. A suitable adhesive for the tape is greaselike and fire-resistant and may be silicone grease or other fire-resistant greases or a suitable mixture of chlorinated oils and/or waxes. The curable composition 6 may have a filler for fire-resistance, e.g. an epoxy resin, one or more inorganic fillers and a cross-linking agent. Preferably the composition 6 has a volume shrinkage, on setting, of less than 1%. Suitable packing material 5 comprises a spirally-wound length of rope, e.g. asbestos or based on glass fibre, mineral wool or cellular P.V.C. or polychloroprene rubber in the form of a ring or circular shaped extrusion. A filler content of at least 60% and preferably at least 75%, by weight, is suitable.
