Abstract

1484601 Graphitized electrode coke COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 28 April 1975 [6 May 1974] 19906/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] A method of producing a graphitized electrode coke comprises (i) extracting coal with a digestant at an elevated temperature, (2) filtering the extract to reduce the mineral content, (3) removing surplus digestant from the extract, (4) coking the extract to produce a green coke and calcining the green coke at a temperature of at least 1100‹C., and (4) graphitizing the calcined coke, to form a graphitized electrode coke, at a temperature above 2400‹C.; the method produces a coke having a coefficient of thermal expansion within the range 8 x 10<SP>-7</SP>/‹C. to 50 x 10<SP>-7</SP>/‹C. The preferred digestant is anthracene oil.
