Abstract

1484047 Earthworking ripper tips CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 12 Dec 1974 [17 Dec 1973] 53848/74 Heading B3A [Also in Division E1] An earthworking ripper tip 2, Fig. 1, for mounting on a shank member of an earthworking device comprises a support 4 including an internally formed socket 8 for engaging the member, a tapered nose portion 6 attached to the support, the nose having a tapered centrally disposed smooth-surfaced bore 16 diverging towards the support, and a core 18 of material which is harder and more wear resistant than that of the support disposed within the bore and extending from adjacent the support to the end of the nose portion. A method of fabricating an earthworking ripper tip comprises placing core material in the bore, applying heat and/or pressure to affix the material in the bore, and attaching the nose portion to the support. In an embodiment, the core material is in powdered form and a rigid member 28, Fig. 4, is used to compact the material in the bore. The nose portion is heated to sinter the powdered material and the nose portion is attached to the support by friction welding, preferably inertia friction welding. The core may be provided with a tapered tip surface 22 and flat end portion 20. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the ripper tip (2<SP>1</SP>) has unitary nose and support portions.
