Abstract

1483952 Suction lifting device SMEDLEYHP FOOD Ltd 27 Oct 1975 [24 Jan 1975] 3240/75 Heading B8H A hoistable closeable container for a load 15 comprises a load suporting base 10 and a hooded top cover 11, from which peripherally depends a flexible skirt 12, the latter moving into gripping contact with the sides 14 of the base 10 once vacuum is applied to the interior of the container through an opening 20 in the cover 11, whereafter hoisting of the cover also lifts the base 10. Vacuum is applied to the container by an extractor fan 24 withdrawing air through a gauze screen 22 over the opening 20 and a normally closed inlet 26 in the cover 11 is opened to release the vacuum in the container to deposit the loaded base 10. In a modification (not shown) the flexible skirt is formed by substantially closed tubes which are inflated by air from the extractor fan when the vacuum is being generated, to assist gripping between the skirt and base.
