Abstract

148,388. Bea, R. E. Aug. 3, 1917, [Convention date]. Zinc oxide.-Old brass is melted in a rotary electric furnace to obtain copper, the vapours of zinc oxide being exhausted and condensed. Fig. 1 is an elevation of the furnace and Fig. 2 a section on line 2 .. 2 of Fig. 1. The sheet-metal cylinder a is provided with holes c for the carbon electrodes k, is lined with magnesia or alumina and is charged through the hole e. The rollers g rest on four wheels h, h<1> two of which are keyed to the spindle i which imparts movement. Brass waste is introduced through the spout f by opening the door r of the hood q as soon as the lining is at a white red heat, and when it is melted the furnace is repeatedly oscillated through. The fumes are drawn through the spout and hood by means of an air exhauster, and air entering the furnace round the electrodes comes into contact with the oscillating metal bath. The zinc in distilling burns with a blue flame, the colour changing to greenish white when separation is complete. The copper is withdrawn through the spout f and door s, and the zinc oxide vapours are condensed in a series of chambers, forming grey and white of zinc.
