Abstract

141,956. Jarvis, G. A. June 4, 1919. Scrap processes.-In making steel from scrap, a small part of the charge is melted in an openhearth furnace with a carburizing agent, whereupon the main part of the charge, preheated to about 800‹ C., is added. Alternatively, the molten carburized metal may be added to the main charge in a separate furnace. The process may be worked as a continuous one. The preheating may be effected in containers erected over the hearth; or portable and travelling preheaters may be used. Metal and slag may be withdrawn from the furnace by means of a syphon.
