Abstract
372,964. Electric furnaces. PEHRSON, A. H., Norrnas, Oscar Fredriksborg, Sweden. June 2, 1931, No. 16112. [Class 39 (iii).] A tilting 01 oscillating furnace is provided with short-circuited electrodes 3, 4 and the shape of the charge is changed hy movement from one to the other of two positions from a shallow charge with a large surface to a deep charge with a small surface whereby complete rearrangement of the charge occurs. The heating chamber is bottle shaped and of elongated cross section. The change of shape occurs with a tilt of 90‹. Current is supplied to the electrodes by a sleeve 5, Fig. 3, clamped around plates 7 closely fitting the electrodes, the plates extend. ing into the water-cooled sleeves 8. In the reduction of chromium ore the ore together with carbon or silicon in briquette form is charged into the furnace and fresh carbon or silicon is charged on to the slag layer when formed. During tilting the reducing agent is brought into contact with the oxides in the slag. A condenser may be connected to the furnace and the chromium then separates from the iron by distillation. The apparatus may also be used for obtaining zinc and other volatile metals.
