Abstract

1483124 Coupling torque-transmitting members BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG 20 Dec 1974 [22 Dec 1973] ‹55132/74 Heading F2U Two components are coupled to rotate together by bodies between contacting surfaces of the components, which bodies are harder than the material of the components, formed by nitrogen diffusion into a grooved surface, and bite into this material to key them together. As shown a spacer sleeve 11 between bearing races 14 and 15 is coupled to these races by means of grooves and nitrided end faces 12, 13, axial compression of the spacer 11 by a nut 19 which biases races 14, 15, sleeve 11 and a flange 16 against a shoulder 20 of a shaft 6, on which the races 14 and 15 are mounted, causing the hardened layer to crack at the peaks between the grooves and so form the bodies which are pressed into the surfaces, as shown in Fig. 3. Instead of the ends of the sleeve 11 being grooved and hardened, grooved and hardened rings may be positioned between the ends of the sleeve 11 and the races 14, 15 (Fig. 2a, not shown). The grooves can be those created by normal machinery (of a depth of 15 to 20 Ám). The shaft 6 can be a vehicle axle shaft and the coupling prevents movement of the sleeve 11 relative to shaft 6 due to twisting of shaft 6 under torque.
