Abstract

649,440. Shaft collars; securing and rota tively mounting articles on shafts. SIN GER MOTORS, Ltd., and SHORTER, L. J Dec. 3, 1948, No. 31309. [Class 80(ii)]' Locking means for a splined thrust collar 17 of the kind which is turnable in a groove 19 in a splined shaft 11 to bring its splines end on to the shaft splines comprises an axial key 21 engaging between two adjacent splines of the collar and shaft and located axially in one or both directions by a circlip 25 or circlips engaging a light annular groove or grooves in the shaft splines. The collar 17 is shown as acting to locate a gear wheel 14 against axial movement to the left. The gear 14 is either rotatably mounted on a bush 13 splined to the shaft 11, or, according to the Provisional Specification, directly splined on the shaft, and a spline of the bush or wheel is cut away to accomodate the key and locate it axially in one direction. The edges of the key 21 are chamfered, Fig. 2 (not shown), so that the key completely fills the gap between splines of truncated triangular shape, and two diametrically opposed keys 21 may be used. Where thrust collars are employed on both sides of the gear to locate it against axial movement in either direction, Fig. 4 (not shown), a single key or keys passing completely through the gear or bush locates both collars. In this case the key does not project beyond the collars, and is located by circlips at each end abutting the outer faces of the collars.
