Abstract
1481546 Boring earth &c HUGHES TOOL CO 23 Oct 1974 [2 Jan 1974] 45780/74 Heading E1F An earth boring drill bit, e.g. of the type used to enlarge a pilot hole between underground passages and which can be dismantled to facilitate transport through the passages, includes a first part consisting of a stem 11 having connection means 13 for attachment to a drill pipe (not shown) and carrying a collar 17, base plate 15 and a first pair of laterally extending cutter supports 21, 23 which together define pockets on opposite sides of the stem 11, and a second part consisting of a second pair of laterally extending cutter supports 41, 43 fixed to a collar 35, the two parts being assembled by placing the collar 35 over the stem 11 so that the second cutter supports 41, 43 enter the pockets to orientate the cutter supports 41, 43 and transmit torques and thrusts. When assembled the upper surfaces 45, 47 of the second cutter supports 41, 43 are co-planar with the upper surfaces 29, 33 of the first cutter supports and a clearance C is left between the vertical surfaces as shown in Fig. 1. A portion of each clearance is enlarged to form a groove 52 machined to receive a shim 53, (Fig. 2), the shims 53 being secured by nuts and bolts 57. The cutter supports 21, 23, 41, 43 carry cutter assemblies 49 (Fig. 1) having roller cutters 51.
