Abstract

1480787 Laminates CIBA-GEIGY AG 11 Sept 1975 [11 Oct 1974] 44115/74 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Laminates may be prepared using as adhesive a urea-formaldehyde resin obtained by heating 20-200 p.b.w. of urea at 60-120‹ C. and pH 6-10 for at least ¢ hr. with 100 p.b.w. (solids basis) of a UF resin precursor of U : F ratio 1 : 1À8-2À3 and solids content 40-70 wt. per cent, to obtain a resin of U : F ratio 1 : 0À4-1À4 and dynamic viscosity 10-300 m.Pas. at 90‹ C. in 55-80% solids aqueous solution. The product may be used without a curing agent, or with formic acid or phosphoric acid when the U : F ratio is less than 1 : 1. In Examples 1-10 precursor solutions of U:: F ratio 1 : 1À9 or 1 : 2À2 are heated with sufficient urea to give a final U : F ratio of 1 : 0À5, 0À75, 0À87 or 1, in solutions of viscosity 16-270 m.Pas./90‹ C. The solutions are used, in Examples 11-14, to bond paper to paper, card, wood, glass and aluminium, cotton fabric to card, and aluminium foil to plasterboard.
