Abstract

1,254,786. Plywood. BECK KOLLER & CO. (ENGLAND) Ltd. 12 March, 1969 [12 March, 1968], No. 12891/69. Heading B5L. [Also in Division C3] Plywood is made using as adhesive a resin obtained by heating urea and formaldehyde in a molar ratio of 1 : 1À7-2À5 in an alkaline buffered aqueous medium at 75-100‹ C. until the solution develops a precipitate between 50 and 70‹ C., then acidifying and adding phenol or a C1-12 alkyl-substituted phenol and continuing the heating for at least 30 mins after the addition, the product having phenol : urea and formaldehyde : urea+phenol molar ratios of 1 : 10-50 and 1À7-2À0 : 1 respectively. In the Example a 3-ply plywood is bonded with a resin obtained by heating a commercial UF concentrate with water, methanol, Na 3 PO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , triethanolamine and urea, then adding H 2 SO 4 and phenol, and finally neutralizing with triethanolamine.
