Abstract

1479944 Supercharging engines MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AG 2 Oct 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 42845/74 Heading F1B A supercharged I.C. engine comprises a blower 7 driven by an exhaust gas driven turbine 5 and a second blower 10 arranged to supply air to the inlet of the blower 7, the second blower 10 being connectible with the inlet of the blower 7 via a nozzle 14 which is displaceable towards and away from the inlet to the blower 7 and is adapted to fit thereinto. One cross-sectional area of the outlet of the nozzle 14 is substantially equal to the cross-sectional area of the inlet to the blower 10 adjacent its impeller wheel 34. The position of the nozzle may be determined in response to the speed of blower 7 or in response to the pressure produced by the blower by a sensing element 24, Fig. 1 which actuates a valve 27 to connect a compressed air supply 22 to one of two lines 29, 30 to cause pistons 20 to move the nozzle 14. At low engine speed, the nozzle 14 fits into the inlet to blower 7 and a motor 11 which drives blower 10 is operative. At intermediate engine speed, the nozzle 14 is withdrawn from the inlet to blower 7 to form an annular passage 33, preferably with a cross-sectional area equal to that of the outlet of nozzle 14, and the motor 11 remains operative. At high engine speed when the output of the blower 7 is sufficient to supply the engine with the air required, the motor 11 is de-energized, in dependence on the speed of the blower 7. To muffle the noise produced by the air-flow, an inner cylinder 36 and a muffler 15 are provided and have a lining 37 of felt or the like.
