Abstract
1479699 Hydrodimerizing acrylonitrile into adiponitrile STANDARD OIL CO 4 Sept 1974 [10 Sept 1973] 38684/74 Heading C7B Adiponitrile is produced by electro-chemical hydrodimerization of acrylonitrile dissolved in an aqueous electrolyte, preferably in an undivided cell, wherein ammonia is added to the cell and oxidized at or near the anode. The electrolyte preferably contains at least 15% water and comprises acetonitrile or a tetraalkyl, e.g. ethyl, propyl, butyl, ammonium salt, e.g. bromide, chloride, paratoluene sulphonate. The ammonia is preferably added to the cell, e.g. injected into a line downstream of a pump for cycling the solution removed through a cooling system, in an amount at least equal to that stoichiometrically required as a proton replenisher e.g. 0À1 to 0.5 molar. Bi-polar disc electrodes spaced apart by plastics inserts may be used; preferably graphite anodes impregnated with metal e.g. Pt, and cathodes with high hydrogen over-voltage e.g. Pb, Hg, Al, Sn, Zn or Cd.
