Abstract

1479661 Detection of protein; slide device GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 4 June 1974 [30 July 1973] 24688/74 Addition to 1443181 Heading G1B A method of testing a solution for the presence in it of a protein comprises depositing by evaporation on to a wafer of a light transmissive substrate material a metal having high atomic mobility and poor surface wetting characteristics, immersing the wafer in a solution of a protein specifically reactive with the protein to be tested for to coat the wafer with a monomolecular layer of the specifically reactive protein, immersing the coated wafer in the solution to be tested, removing the wafer from the solution, placing it with the protein-coated surface in contact with a surface of a light-reflecting liquid such as mercury and examining the wafer to determine whether it has on it a bimolecular or a monomolecular protein layer. A device used in detecting protein in a liquid comprises a substrate having a gold surface, a layer of another metal such as indium between the gold surface and the substrate and attached to the gold surface a monomolecular layer of a protein specifically reactive with the protein to be detected. The substrate may be a glass slide. The other metal may be indium as mentioned, or gold, silver, tin or lead. The method and device described may be used in direct or indirect testing. Diagnosis of hepatitis is described, and there is a reference to pregnancy testing.
