Abstract

1443181 Separating proteins GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 26 June 1973 [26 June 1973] 30182/73 Heading C3H [Also in Division G1 A protein is separated from a solution containing it by a method comprising immersing a substrate in a solution of a protein specifically reactive with the protein to be separated, so forming a monomolecular layer of the specifically reactive protein on the substrate, then immersing the substrate in the solution containing the protein to be separated removing the substrate therefrom and examining it for formation of a bimolecular layer. The substrate may be of metal, glass, mica, plastics material, fused silica or quartz, and is preferably a glass slide either coated with metal or metal oxide or having on its surface globules of a metal for example indium produced by evaporation. The examination of the slide to detect a bimolecular layer may be carried out by one of the methods shown in the drawing. The substrate may then be immersed in a weak acid to sever the bonds between the proteins, or alternatively the bimolecular layer on the substrate may be brought temporarily into contact with a drop of a weak acid on a second substrate, when the second substrate retains a monomolecular layer of the protein to be separated.
