1479643 Numeric display PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 31 Oct 1974 [3 Nov 1973] 47172/74 Heading G5C In a multi-digit numerical display incident light passes through transparent glass face plate 1 carrying on its rear surface transparent SnO electrodes, seven per digit in the form of figures of eight 11, 12 connected by transparent connections and separated by a layer of nematic liquid crystal suspension from a glass rearplate 2, not necessarily transparent, carrying a specularly selecting A1 coating 9 in the form of one region 14 including counter electrodes 15, 16 opposite electrode groups 11, 12, and a second region 13 separated by a thin etched line 20 from the region 14, covering the remainder of the field. Drive signals applied between specified electrodes in groups 11, 12 and counter electrode area 14 causes turbulence and optical scattering by the crystals, making the segment visible. A 1 kHz signal may be applied to region 13 to prevent scattering in this area with low threshold compositions. Scattering from the connections will in either case be prevented and coplanarity of rear electrodes and reflective prevents double imaging.
