Abstract

1479579 Collision protection in road vehicles MITSUBISHI JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 11 Sept 1974 53662/76 Divided out of 1479051 Heading B7B In a collision, the truck bumpers 301, 302 act through a hydraulic system to move the load carrying part 1 of the truck relative to the truck frame 3. The arrangement results in the carrier 1 being decelerated more rapidly than the frame 3 so that the cab 2, which is fixed relative to the frame, suffers a reduced deceleration. As illustrated, if a forward collision occurs, bumper 301 acts through a gas space 305 and a piston 304 to force oil through an orifice 317 and past a reservoir 316 to increase the pressure in a cylinder space 312. Piston rod 315 is thus forced to the right and after first shearing plates 51 which connect the carrier and frame, moves the carrier rearwardly relative to the frame. Oil pressure to the right of piston 314 acts to compress gas in space 320, thereby absorbing more energy. There is mirror image operation if the rear bumper 302 is hit. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the air spaces 305 and 320 are omitted together with the pistons 304 and 319, and their effect is achieved by perforating and spring loading the remaining pistons. In another embodiment, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), a hydraulic piston and cylinder unit normally acts to tip the carrier of a dump truck. However, a hydraulic system similar to that illustrated in Fig. 2 causes the piston and cylinder unit to move the carrier relative to the frame in the event of a sufficient impact on one of the bumpers.
