Abstract

1489360 Absorbing energy by extrusion IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 7 Oct 1974 [10 July 1973] 32790/73 Heading F2E [Also in Division B7] In a motor vehicle an internal combustion engine is restrained from fore and/or aft movement relative to the vehicle by energy absorbing means which is adapted to extrude a solid material. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, a piston 6 connected to the engine 9 is located between two slugs 10, 11 of plastics material (although other material such as lead may be used), in a cylinder 5 secured to the vehicle chassis so that on initial impact of the vehicle the engine moves forwardly to back extrude the slug 11 into the adjacent compartment. The chassis then moves relative to engine 9 so that the slug material is again back extruded. Other forms of absorbing means include a ram 14, Fig. 3, which is secured to the engine for extruding a slug 13 contained in a cylinder 12 fixed to the chassis. Also a block (21), Fig. 4 (not shown), connected to the engine has pistons (19), (20) which act in the fore and aft direction between cylinders (17), (18) containing slugs which are extruded in a similar manner. In another embodiment a cylinder (22), Fig. 5 (not shown), has a longitudinal aperture (23) through which extends a piston-rod (24) connected to a plate type piston (25) on either side of which material is located for extrusion. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, an engine block 26 is mounted through a torsional mounting 35 to a cylinder 29 containing a piston 30 fixed on to a flexible piston-rod 31 which is held at each end by mounting blocks 32, 33 bolted to the chassis. Two halves 37, 38 of an extrusion slug are located on each side of the piston 30.
