Abstract

1479051 Collision protection in road vehicles MITSUBISHI JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 11 Sept 1974 39711/74 Heading B7B The load carrying part of a truck is free to slide longitudinally relative to the truck frame when an impact force greater than a given size is imposed on it. An hydraulic arrangement then plays at least a part in abosrbing the kinetic edergy of the carrier. The truck bumpers together with plastic deformation of the truck frame can thus play a more effective part in protecting the cab occupants from the effects of collision. As illustrated in Fig. 4, the carrier 1 of a dump truck can move longitudinally by the deforming action of its pivot pin 63 on slots in mounting plates 62. During each longitudinal movement, energy is absorbed by the piston and cylinder unit 401 which is normally responsible for tipping the carrier. The energy absorption is effected by the forced passage of oil through a piston by-pass 407. In modifications (not shown), the pivot pin mounting has bolts which can move by deforming slots, or the mounting can cam out of a depression against a resilient bias. In another embodiment, the carrier is normally fixed relative to the frame by U-bolts and by plates which shear when there is a sufficient relative force between the carrier and the frame. Energy is subsequently absorbed by a piston and cylinder unit 100 (Fig. 2) which has a perforated piston and which is connected between the carrier and the frame. Further energy is absorbed by the action of a layer 5 of friction material interposed between the carrier and the frame.
