Abstract

1487353 Braking by friction and permanent deformation MITSUBISHI JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 8 Oct 1974 43631/74 Heading F2E [Also in Division B7] A tractor-semitrailer vehicle, Fig. 1, comprises a semitrailer 3 coupled through a coupler 23 to a tractor 2, the coupler 23 resting on friction plates 24 provided on the tractor chassis frame 22 and being bolted to the chassis frame by bolts 231, Fig. 2, the arrangement being such that upon application of a sufficiently large impact to the vehicle tending to move the semitrailer forwardly relative to the tractor, the coupler 23 slides forwardly on the friction plates 24 to absorb kinetic energy by causing plastic deformation of slots (222), Fig. 3 (not shown), provided in the chassis frame 22. In the modified embodiment of Fig. 11, a semitrailer 5 is coupled to a traction vehicle 4 through a wheeled dolly 51 having a coupler 53 resting on friction plates 54. Shear plates 37 and energy absorbing means 30 are connected between the coupler 53 and the dolly frame 52. Each energy absorbing means 30 comprises a rod 33, Fig. 8, which is plastically deformed by a die 32 on application of a sufficiently large impact to the semitrailer 5. In the further modified embodiment of Fig. 12 (not shown), a coupler (23) is connected to a tractor chassis frame (22) by means (60) comprising inclined sliding surfaces which cause the coupler (23) to move forwardly and upwardly in an impact situation. U-bolts (68) are plastically deformed by the upward movement of the coupler so as to absorb kinetic energy.
