Abstract

1479370 Containers; closures; portable containers SAS ANGELO GUALA DI PIERGIACOMO E ROBERTO GUALA & C 27 Aug 1974 [31 Aug 1973] 37450/74 Headings B8T and B8D A closure device incorporating a safety seal for bottles, of the type incorporating a pierceable container for substances to be introduced into the bottle consists of two moulded plastics elements 1, 2. Element 1 has cup portion 9, 10 and a tubular portion 3 with two internal axially spaced apart annular ridges 4, 5 and a tubular portion 6, below ridges 4, 5 of smaller diameter than tubular portion 3 and closed by a rupturable base 7. Element 2 comprises a tubular portion 12 adapted to fit inside the tubular portion 3 of element 1 and having an external annular ridge 14 and a piercing tip 13 adapted to be used to tear the rupturable portion 8 connecting the base 7 to the wall 6 of element 1. The tubular portion 12 is closed at its upper end by a transverse wall 15 which projects radially beyond the portion 12 and supports a cylindrical depending collar 16. The transverse wall 15 is connected peripherally, by means of breakable radial bridge elements 17, to a cylindrical bush 18 coaxially surrounding the tubular portion 12 and provided with an internal annular ridge 19. The operation of the closure device is as follows. After having placed a substance B into element 1 and having engaged element 2 into element 1, the closure 1, 2 is placed in the neck of the bottle until the cup part 9 rests on the neck of the bottle, an axially directed force is applied to the transverse wall 15 to move ridge 14 on to ridge 5 and thus expand the tubular portion 3 to wedge the closure device 1, 2 into the neck of the bottle. Further downward movement is prevented by ridge 19 engaging the edge of cup portion 10 and prevents the rupturing of the base 7 by the tip 13. Pulling the bush 18 upwards with a twisting movement breaks the bridge elements 17 and allows removal of the bush 18. A further downward motion of element 2, until the collar 16 seats in cup portion 9, is now possible. This movement results in breakage of rupturable portion 8 by tip 13, releasing substance B into the bottle and, by taking ridge 14 past ridge 5, allows elastic contraction of the tubular portion 3 so that the closure device can be extracted from the bottle.
