1479336 Machinery guards THOMAS & BETTS CORP 27 Nov 1974 [28 Nov 1973] 51376/74 Heading F2J [Also in Division B3] A safety shield for protecting an operator's fingers &c. from the die members 40, 42 of a manually or, as shown, hydraulically or pneumatically power operated cutting and crimping tool for electrical cables 62 &c., comprises a U-shaped guard 22 (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) which is pivoted at 26 on a fixed post 28, of the tool frame 30, and constantly spring biased at 32 (Fig. 9, not shown) towards its closed i.e. guarding position, the guard 22 having flanged edge portions 54, 56 whereby insertion of a workpiece 62 into the tool initially engages the guard via one or other flanged edges 54 or 56 to raise the guard 22 to expose the work zone 38 so that the workpiece 62 may be advanced therein between the die members 40, 42, the guard 22 being maintained in contact with the workpiece (Fig. 4) by its spring bias to constantly restrict access to the die members 40, 42. The guard 22 has an arcuate slot 64 which limits the fully closed and opened positions of the guard 22 by engagement with a fixed pin 66. As shown the cutting and crimping tool carries the piston operated movable die 40 in its frame 30 and, via the fixed post 28 and a further pivoted post 68, carries the stationary die 42, the stationary die 42 being releasable from the pin 72 on post 68 and outwardly pivoted (Fig. 5) whereby the tool may be positioned for cutting and/or crimping operations at any point along an electrical cable 62.
