Abstract

1479290 Photographic silver salt diffusion transfer material POLAROID CORP 25 July 1974 [27 July 1973] 32942/74 Heading G2C [Also in Division C3] A transparent photo-sensitive element comprises (a) a transparent support carrying (b) a photo-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer, the silver halide grains of which being predominantly homogeneous in crystal diameter and the sum of the projected areas of the grains, i.e. the sum of the projected areas of the individual grains minus any overlapping projected area of overlapping grains, being not more than 50% of the surface area of the emulsion layer and (c) a silver receptive layer. Layer (b) may be free of overlapping silver halide grains. The silver halide grains may have a mean diameter of 0À7-1À5 microns, preferably 0À7-1À0 micron. Layer (b) may contain 90-125 mg/ft<SP>2</SP> silver preferably 100 mg/ft<SP>2</SP> silver, and may comprise a substituted halide silver halide emulsion, see Ex. 1-4 and 6. The silver halide grains may have a mean projected area of 0À6 square micron, at least 90% of the grains having a projected area of 0À5-1À5 times the mean projected area. The dispersion number of the grain size frequency distribution curve may be 0À40 or less. The transparent support may carry a light-transmitting screen e.g. a multi-colour screen, see Ex. 2-6. Layer (c) may be 0À1-0À3 micron thick. A permeable polymer layer e.g. a gelatine layer may be coated over layer (b). In Example 6 processing is effected in the presence of N-benzyl-α-picolinium bromide which keeps the maximum density of the developed negative low particularly where the principal developing agent is an α#-enediol e.g. tetramethyl reductic acid. Examples 1 and 4 describe preparations of substituted halide silver halide emulsions and Example 5 describes the preparation of the homogeneous grain size silver halide emulsion.
