Abstract
alpha ,ss-monoolefinically unsaturated monomers which are water-soluble or are capable of forming water-soluble salts are converted into the state of a solution in the water phase of a water-in-oil emulsion. Their polymerisation is carried out in the W/O emulsion with the aid of photoinitiators which are soluble in the water phase or oil phase and with the aid of UV light. In this way, stable W/O emulsions having a high content of extremely high-molecular-weight polymers dissolved in the aqueous phase are obtainable. The preparation can be carried out either batchwise or continuously. The process is suitable for the preparation of polymers which are employed as retention agents in papermaking or as flocculants in effluent treatment.
