Abstract

Latices obtainable by emulsion polymerisation of vinyl chloride, optionally with other copolymerisable monomers, are concentrated. Ultrafiltration through a semipermeable membrane made from a synthetic polymer removes water and low-molecular-weight substances dissolved therein from the latex. The membrane should retain substances from a molecular weight of 5,000 to 100,000 and is treated before the ultrafiltration with an aqueous emulsifier solution. This considerably reduces the formation of deposits on the membrane during the ultrafiltration. The pretreatment of the membrane is carried out using emulsifiers as used for the emulsion polymerisation of vinyl chloride.
