1478297 Dynamo-electric machines CONTROLOGY TECHNIQUES Ltd 8 Aug 1974 [10 Aug 1973] 38071/73 Heading H2A [Also in Division G3] A voltage regulator for an alternator comprises a field winding excitation control circuit connected, in use, across the alternator output and including a full-wave rectifier 18 arranged to supply D.C. to the alternator field winding, and a voltage sensor 12 and cross-over detector 15 connected, in use, across the alternator output, the cross-over detector controlling a pulse generator 14 which provides an output control signal for each half-cycle of alternator output voltage, the output of voltage sensor 12 being fed to a current comparator 13 which controls the mark to space ratio of the output signals of generator 14, these signals being fed to a drive circuit 16 which controls a current control circuit 17 controlling the D.C. fed by the rectifier 18 to the field winding. The current control circuit 17 may comprise a triac, as shown, or thyristors. The pulse generator 14 is a monostable multivibrator including NOR gates G3, G4. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the transformer T1 in the voltage sensor 12 is replaced by an RC network and the resistor R18 in the rectifier 18 is replaced by a flywheel diode (D21). In a further modification (not shown) the triac QT1 is omitted altogether and the diodes D8 and D9 in the rectifier 18 are replaced by thyristors.
