Abstract

1478126 Water repellancy NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 22 April 1974 [28 Aug 1973] 40474/73 Heading DIP [Also in Division C3] Water-permeable surfaces are rendered water-repellent by applying to them a composition comprising an organic solvent-soluble organosilicon compound prepared by acidleaching cations from an inorganic silicate and replacing the cations by organosilyl groups. Preferably the composition is a solution in an organic solvent or an emulsion of such a solution in water and contains 1-25 wt % of the organosilicon compound. A cross-linking agent for the organosilicon compound may also be applied. In Examples 1, 11-13, and 15 powdered synthetic or natural wollastonite, olivine or sepiolite is shaken, optionally with glass ballotini as a grinding agent, with hydrochloric acid and hexamethyldisiloxane in isopropanol/water mixture; the products are taken up in hexane, added before or after the reaction. In Example 14 aqueous sodium silicate is stirred into dilute sulphuric acid, and the mixture into Me 3 SiCl in methanol. Each product is used as a 4 or 5 wt % solution in white spirit to treat dried cotton, wool, nylon or polyester/cotton fabrics previously treated with 4% titanium tetrabutoxide in white spirit (Exs 1-11, 13-15, 17 and 18), or brick (Ex 11), limestone (Ex 12), cement (Ex 16) or wooden panels (Ex 19). In Example 17 the product is dissolved in acetone, then emulsified in water.
