Abstract
1477914 Phenolic resin compositions STOLLACK AG 4 Oct 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 43243/74 Headings C3R and C3B A coating or impregnating composition or a moulding composition comprises a binder containing a phenolic resin and optionally at least one other resin, e.g. an epoxy resin, a melamine resin and/or a polyester resin, the amount of phenolic resin being at least 15 % wt. with respect to the total weight of binder, and further comprises an accelerator which is finely divided tin having a maximum particle size of 12 Ám, in an amount of up to 1% wt. based on the weight of the composition, and auxiliary agents, and optionally solvents, pigments, dyestuffs and/or fillers, and optionally one or more of an organic phosphoric acid ester, orthophosphoric acid, or an alkyl or aryl sulphonic acid, e.g. paratoluene sulphonic acid. The phenolic resin may be modified, thermosetting and/or watersoluble. The tin may be used in powder form or as a colloidal metal solution. The tin accelerator may be added to the composition prior to, during or after the application of the composition to the substrate, or it may be applied to the substrate itself, e.g. an aluminium strip so as to fill the pores in the strip, or it may be incorporated in the composition. The drying, hardening or cross-linking may be carried out at room temperatures, or in drying ovens or by the use of infra-red, beta-, or electron beam radiation. In Example 1 an internal lacquer for cans is prepared from a non-plasticized, thermosetting etherified phenolic resin, xylene, an epoxy resin, ethylene glycol and an alpha form of tin dust. In Example 2 an air-drying lacquer for cars is prepared from an air-drying phenolic resin, a fatty-acid-modified air-drying alkyd resin, orthophosphoric acid, ethylene glycol and powdered tin. In Example 3 a stoving enamel which is coated on to an Al foil is prepared from a phenol-HCHO condensate, xylene, butanol, hexamethoxymethyl melamine resin, orthophosphoric acid, an epoxy resin, tin dust, ethyl glycol and butyl acetate. In Example 4 a powdered lacquer is prepared from an epoxy resin, a phenol-HCHO condensate, para-toluene sulphonic acid and tin dust. In Example 5 a water-dilutable stoving enamel for the inside of cans is prepared from a phenolic resin, an alkyd resin, glycol ethers, phosphoric acid, tin dust, ethylene glycol and water.
