Abstract

1477557 Alkali metalmetal-silicates ANGLIAN WATER AUTHORITY 18 Sept 1975 38339/75 Addition to 1399598 Heading C1A Aqueous compositions containing complex alkali metalmetal silicate material, particularly sodium aluminium silicate, are prepared by continuously bringing together and substantially immediately mixing in a vessel under high shear with a rotor having a blade or blades that rotate at a speed of at least 1000 rpm, concentrated aqueous solution of alkali metal silicate and of a salt of a metal other than an alkali or an alkaline earth metal, and by continuously forcing the product out of the vessel, the proportions of alkali metal silicate metal salt and water being such that in the aqueous composition, the weight of silicate measured as SiO 2 is at least 10% and the pH of the composition is from 2 to 7À5. A suitable vessel is shown in Fig. 1 comprising a cylindrical mixing chamber 1, and pipes 14 and 15 through which the alkali metal silicate and metal salt may be separately introduced; the chamber contains a multiblade rotor 10, having blades set at 10 to 20 degrees to the horizontal; the rotor is driven by motor 7. The fixed multiblade stator 12 has blades set at 10 to 20 degrees to the vertical. An outlet duct 13 is clamped to the top of the chamber at 4 through which the product is continuously forced by the rotor action.
