Abstract

1486495 Mixing apparatus ANGLIAN WATER AUTHORITY 18 Sept 1975 38340/75 Heading B1C [Also in Division C1] A process for making an aqueous dispersion of a complex alkali metal-aluminium silicate having a pH of 3-7.5. which contains up to 5% silicate and is soluble in hydrochloric acid, for use as a coagulant, by mixing aqueous solutions of an alkali metal silicate and an aluminium salt in a mixing tube having at least two inlets, comprises supplying the bulk of the water through one inlet and the alkali metal silicate through another, and constraining the mixture to flow in a generally helical path by stationary means in the tube, the pressure drop being at least 40 p.s.i. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, sodium or potassium silicate is supplied through pipe 3, aluminium sulphate through pipe 5 and water through pipe 4. A core 10 having helical grooves 12 and with its base in the pipe 4 causes the water to emerge as a rotating annular curtain, the pressure drop in zone A causing high shear; a helical baffle 13 then reverses the direction of rotation with turbulent mixing. Hydrochloric acid may be introduced through a pipe 14. The apparatus may discharge directly to a liquid to be treated, or may be discharged by a hydraulic ejector (16, Fig. 2 not shown) providing additional dilution and pressure below atmospheric by at least 10 m. Hg. Additionally or alternatively to the core 10 there may be in the mixing tube a helix formed of twisted sheet metal which may also be cut perpendicular to its axis to form various arrangements of vanes (see Figs. 4-8, not shown).
