Abstract

Pistons.-The head of the piston of an internalcombustion engine is formed with narrow and deep grooves, which permit expansion, but are too narrow to allow gas eddies and consequent cooling. Combustion residue collects in the grooves and forms an insulating material, or the grooves may be filled with insulating material during casting or subsequently. To facilitate retention of the insulating material the grooves may be tapered inwardly, as shown in Fig. 5, or may communicate with pockets in the head. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 7, a layer of insulating material 6 in the interior of the head communicates with the insulation of the grooves, which are indicated by dotted lines. The grooves may be cast or milled, or may be formed by attaching ribs to the head. The grooves are closest together at the point where the fuel is injected, i.e. either at the centre or at the side.
