Abstract

1476520 Gear testing apparatus MAAG GEAR-WHEEL & MACHINE CO Ltd 13 Sept 1974 [14 Sept 1973] 40032/74 Heading G1M Apparatus for testing the profile of a gear tooth comprises a feeler 12 mounted for movement over a gear profile, drive means arranged to move the probe according to a predetermined programme, means for producing measuring signals related to the tooth profile as the probe moves across the surface and means for comparing these signals with reference signals to determine tooth profile errors. In Figure 1, probe 11 is mounted on a member 10 slidably mounted on a member 24. Member 24 is slidably mounted on member 6 which is in turn slidable on base 2. Members 6, 24 and 10 are driven by servomotors 13, 15 and 17 respectively. The end 12 of the probe is laterally displaceable against a biasing spring and means is provided for measuring the lateral displacement. In use, a control unit 25 controls the servomotors to move the probe end 12 along a predetermined path programmed into a computer 26, position feedback control signals being provided to the unit 25 by position sensors 20, 22 and 24. Signals representing the lateral displacements of the probe end 12 are compared in the computer with reference values, and errors are indicated at 27. In the modification of Fig. 2, the member 10 is not provided with a servomotor, but is biased by a spring 30 so that the end 12 of the probe 11, which end is rigid with the probe, is urged into contact with the tooth. The signals from the position sensor 24 are compared in the computer with reference signals.
