Abstract

[Also in Division G1] In the manufacture of sheet material, e.g. glass in sheet form by flowing molten glass 3 on to a bath of molten tin 2, there is provided a pneumatic sensing means 7, including an inner tube located within an outer tube to form an annular nozzle through which gas under pressure is discharged, a pressure-sensitive switch 10 responsive to the back pressure in the inner tube, and pneumatic driving means for reciprocating the nozzle 7 laterally with respect to the edge of the sheet 4. A signal is thus produced indicative of the width of the sheet 3 which is fed through an electro-pneumatic sampling device 13 to appropriate information recording or utilizing apparatus. As shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus is used for determining the position of the lateral edge of a sheet of glass. In this case, the nozzle 7 moves to the edge of the ribbon, whereupon the positive signal recorded by the switch 10 changes to a negative signal which feeds a pulse to the nozzle moving apparatus to reverse the direction of movement of the nozzle 7. Hence the nozzle is reciprocated across the width of the ribbon. The results are fed to a pneumatic recording device 14 where they are shown graphically. To measure the width of the strip probes are provided at each edge and the two results are either shown graphically at 14 or averaged. Details of the electro-pneumatic circuit are described with reference to Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings. If a large lump of glass impinges against the nozzle 7, the probe rotates actuating a guard switch 99 which operates a probe retraction device, the probe being spring returned to its initial position. In a modification, the apparatus is arranged so that any deviations of ribbon width from the desired dimension actuate means to move a fender to steer the ribbon to the correct position. In the width measuring device, the signal may be fed to adjust the inflow of molten glass to maintain the ribbon width constant, i.e. by either adjusting the drawing roller (124) spacing or speed of rotation and/or the height of tweel (122). Alternatively, the temperature may be controlled.
