Abstract

1360608 Measuring thickness electrically DAVEY-LOEWY Ltd 8 July 1971 [19 Aug 1970] 39977/70 Heading G1N Apparatus for determining the lateral profile of strip material by detecting the thickness of the material, which may be strip steel, at points across the width comprises means for causing the material to move under tension along a curved path, and means for detecting changes in the speed of the surface at different points across a line on the curved path as measures of changes in thickness. As shown the curved path is provided by a roller 13, and each detector comprises a roller 14 provided with magnetic inserts on the periphery which co-operate with a probe 16 associated with a coil 17 to that the output frequency of this coil depends on the speed of roller 14. As the thickness of the strip varies so the speed of the roller 14 varies, and by providing a number of sensors and comparing the phase differences of the outputs a measure of the thickness variation across the strip is obtained. By comparing the number of pulses obtained for 1 revolution of roller 13 when the strip is in position with that obtained with it removed an absolute measure of thickness is obtained. The effect on the profile of a strip passing through a mill may be obtained by using detectors before and after the mill Fig.3 (not shown). The upstream profile P 1 and speed V 1 and the down stream profile P 2 and speed V 2 are obtained. Profile P 1 is modified according to the speed change to give P 1 ' = P 1 V 1 /V 2 , and P 2 is compared with P 1 ' on a display apparatus to show the profile change.
