Abstract
1475550 Controlling electrolysis automatically Y BROWN 22 July 1974 [3 Aug 1973 2 May 1974] 15909/76 Divided out of 1475549 Heading C7B [Also in Division H1] Electrolysis apparatus for generating a hydrogen/ oxygen mixture for welding purposes includes a further cell whose electrodes are in series with the main cell electrodes, the electrolyte level in this cell being variable by means of gas pressure generated in the main cell, whereby the electrolysis current is caused to vary in dependence on the generated gas pressure. A total cut-out feature may be incorporated either integrally or separately, with also an optional pressure relief valve. The further cell has two chambers, inter-connected at their lower ends, one acting as electrolyte reservoir and the other containing the electrodes. The current controller may have interfitting conical electrodes 34, 35 in a KOH bath. The upper inlet is for gas from electrolysis. A cut-out switch for use in series with the controller has electrodes 43, 44 in Hg 42', with a gas pressure inlet 45. A non- inflammable liquid 43' e.g. silicone or hydrocarbon oil is floated on the Hg to reduce arcing and explosion risks. The safety valve is provided in chamber 32 or 41. An integral controller/electrolysis cell is that described in the Parent Specification. For welding use, the arrangements disclosed in that Specification also apply.
