Abstract
410,161. Electrolytic production of antiseptic solutions. DESPLAT, R., and COMPAGNIE ELECTRO SALVATOR, 31, AllÚes de Tourny, Bordeaux, France. Nov. 5, 1932, No. 31288. [Class 41.] A solution for the production of an antiseptic is fed to an airtight electrolytic cell and passes thence together, if desired, with the gases evolved to the place of use, the factors regulating the degree of electrolysis, such as the effective area of the electrodes, their distance apart and the applied voltage, being regulated in accordance with the temperature, salinity and pressure or rate of supply of the incoming solution in such a way that the temperature of the outflowing solution is maintained constant at about 37-40‹ C. The solution mav contain 5.85 gms. of alkali metal chloride per litre a hypochlorite and oxygen, hydrogen and chlorine are produced. The apparatus shown comprises a cell 1 having a glass lid 2 made airtight with rubber packing 3. The solution entering at 5 passes a thermometer 21 controlling a variable resistance 22 in the circuit of an electromagnet 23 the armature of which regulates the position of a cranked electrode 7. The potential applied to the electrode 7 is regulated according to its position by a variable resistance 12. The treated solution leaves at 4 and passes to distributing devices such as a spray 57 or a jet 56 ; the device 55 permits treatment of a part by the rising gases issuing with the antiseptic liquid. The electrode 7 may be adjusted by a hand-wheel 8. The electrodes pass in an air-tight manner through platinum tubes welded in the lid. In a modification the electrodes consist of coaxial cones of which the inner one is adjustable and the outer forms the wall of the cell. The electric supply is obtained from the plate circuit of a rectifying valve 15 having an auto-transformer input 16. Solution flows in drops regulated by a pin valve 48 from a chamber 42 into a funnel 38 within a chamber 37 where it is mixed with water from a supply 35. The supply of the diluted solution is regulated by a pin valve 29 which simultaneously adjusts the position of an electromagnet 19 to effect a compensation regulation of a resistance 20 in the supply circuit. The main switch 18 is interconnected with cocks 45, 47 and a switch 13 whereby the current may be reversed in successive operations. In a modification the electrolyte is prepared in advance and is withdrawn from a heat-insulated storage tank by a pump actuated by an electric motor. In another modification the mother solution is mixed with water in a mixing turbine rotated by the supply water.
