Abstract
1475549 Controlled electrolytic hydrogen/ oxygen production Y BROWN 22 July 1974 [20 July 1973 3 Aug 1973 2 May 1974] 32283/74 Heading C7B [Also in Division B3] A mixture of hydrogen and oxygen useful for producing a neutral oxy-hydrogen welding flame is produced by electrolysis of water in an undivided cell provided with means for progressively reducing the electrolysis current in response to increasing gas pressure in the cell. As described, cells 70 (for main electrolysis) and 71 are combined in a common housing and inter-connect via a passage between walls 77, 78. The conical electrodes of cell 71 and the terminal electrodes of the bi-polar series in cell 70 are connected in series. Excess gaspressure generated in cell 70 causes the electrolyte level in cell 71 to be lowered (by passage into reservoir 81) whereby less area of electrodes 74 is immersed, providing automatic monitoring and regulation of the rate of electrolysis. 82 is a pressure relief valve. Electrodes 73 are mounted in an insulating tube leaving perforations for passage of electrolyte and gas. A flash-back arrester 83 is provided in the pipe connecting with burner 80. A porous plug, capillary tube or water-bath arrester may be used. An auxiliary generator for separate H 2 or O 2 generation may be provided for producing an oxidizing or reducing flame if required. The burner 80 may include electrodes for arc welding using atomic H/O mixture. The oxygen in the mixture may be separated magnetically or the hydrogen may be stored by absorption in Pd. The electrolyte may be KOH, using A.C. or D.C. current.
