Abstract
1474786 Tunnel kilns CERAVER 28 June 1974 [13 July 1973] 28950/74 Heading F4B A tunnel kiln for heat treating elongated ceramic articles 5 having a circular cross-section comprises a main treatment chamber 3 through which the articles are rolled in container drums 4 themselves formed with longitudinal cylindrical passages receiving the articles, and other chambers 1 and 2 through which the container drums are pushed axially and at the same time given a rotary movement. The chambers have treatment gas inlets 27, 28 and 29 and outlets 30, 31 and 32 enabling the use of different gases and are separated by gas lock chambers 8 and 9 with doors 10-13. The chambers 8 and 9 may be supplied with the appropriate gas or gases to facilitate transfer of the ware. The ware carrying drums 4 are pushed through the kiln chambers by fluid motors 6, 7 and 35 and are separated in the axial direction by stub shafts 23. Mounted on the latter are distance pieces 24 with a length slightly greater than the diameter of the drums, contact of said distance pieces in chamber 3 thus preventing binding contact of said drums. Extending from the walls of chambers 1 and 2 are carbon felt seals 18, 19, 20 and 21 which contact the drums 4. The latter are formed with helical grooves 25 which engage lugs 26 on the chamber walls to rotate the drums as they are pushed axially through the chambers 1 and 2.
