Buildings and chambers.-In an apparatus for drying or smoking fish, &c., hot air is drawn from a heating-chamber 5 by a pump 3 and passes through a trunk 4 into a chamber 1 which receives the fish &c. The heated air passes away through perforations in the top 7 which lead either into an upper chamber 10 leading by a trunk 13 back to the heating-chamber or by pipes 15, 16 to a trunk 17 connected to a chimney. The amounts of air retained in circulation and allowed to escape to the chimney are regulated by valves 12, 19. Smoke may be admitted to the circulating air from a furnace 6, the heating-chamber being in operation or not. The total area of the perforations leading from the chamber 1 to chamber 10 is less than the area of the trunk 4 so that a pressure somewhat above atmospheric may be obtained in the chamber 1. The air in the chamber 5 may be heated by electrical means or by tubes through which steam or products of combustion pass.
