Abstract
1473666 Boat construction R C MARCH 17 May 1974 [30 May 1973] 25792/73 Heading B7A [Also in Divisions B5 and B8] A boat hull, or a mould for a glass fibre or concrete boat, or a plug for such a mould, consists of elongate strips or plates joined edge-to-edge to give a shape of compound curvature, the stresses constraining the strips to lie in the desired shape are transmitted from strip-to-strip by edge flanges which are bolted, welded or glued together. The flanges may be joined by tongues and grooves which may be lubricated or provided with rollers to permit relative longitudinal sliding, to correct the shape of the body either on initial assembly or subsequently. During assembly, a first strip is attached to an edge frame 2, and then each subsequent strip is attached loosely to transverse frames 3 to get its longitudinal axis in the correct position. Finally the adjoining strips are fixed together, this process imparting twist and lateral bending and aligning the surfaces of the strips. The connections to the framework may then be removed. The strips may have surfaces which initially are plane or curved. The strips may be parallel sided, or barrelled as in Fig. 5. The strips may be made of metal or wood or plastics and the flanges may be of different material. For example a plywood strip may have extruded plastics flanges with connecting tongues and grooves incorporated in the extrusion. Alternatively the strips may be of foamed plastics or rubber or cellular metal, or may incorporate hollow plastics or solid rubber balls. The strips may be laminated, e.g. with a core of end grain balsa or expanded polystyrene. The strips may have longitudinal holes. The transverse stiffness may be increased by the use of transverse ribs or by means of glass each fibre laid transversely. Each strip preferably has a uniform longitudinal bending stiffness, i.e. it may be bent as easily about a horizontal longitudinal plane as about a vertical longitudinal plane, and a number of constructions are described in which the stiffness about a longitudinal plane normal to the surface of the strip is increased without increasing the torsional rigidity or transverse bending stiffness.
