Abstract
1473188 Double-walled heat exchanger; cooling of water BOC LINDE REFRIGERATION Ltd 28 May 1975 [28 May 1974] 23642/74 Headings F4H and F4S A double-walled heat exchanger (e.g. for cooling water) comprises an inner container 4 and an outer container 2 with refrigerant coils 24 therebetween. The water is cooled while in contact with the coils. The interspace between the inner and outer containers is divided by horizontal partitions into chambers 23 which extend around the apparatus. Apertures 26 in the partitions connect the chambers in series for water flow therethrough. In each chamber there is a vertical baffle 30 (illustrated more clearly in Fig. 3, not shown) which acts as an end wall of the chamber forcing the water to pass into the next chamber. The interior of the inner container 4 is. divided by a partition 6. Water to be cooled (e.g. which is circulated from and to a milk cooler or air conditioning plant) passes through pipe 9 into compartment 8; thence it passes through pipe 10 and is pumped at 12 through pipe 14 to the interspace between the containers 4 and 2. It enters the lowest chamber 23 as illustrated in Fig. 3 (not shown), and passes through the chambers in series. From the uppermost chamber, it passes through pipe 16 into a compartment 18. From there it leaves through pipe 20 to be pumped at 21 from the apparatus through pipe 25. There may be interchange of water between the compartments 8 and 18. For example, the partition 6 may serve as a weir or may have an opening therethrough at its base. Refrigerant is supplied to the coils 24 as indicated in Fig. 1 and removed through pipes 27 via a manifold 29. The inner container 4 (i.e. the four inside walls) is removable. Further, end outside wall 28 is detachable permitting the refrigerant coils 24 to be removed en bloc. The apparatus could be used in reverse, i.e. as a condenser in which vapour within the coils is condensed into a liquid by giving up heat to a coolant fluid in the chambers.
