Abstract

1471903 Making optical fibre bundles OLYMPUS KOGAKU KOGYO KK 23 July 1974 32560/74 Heading C1M An apparatus for manufacturing an optical fibre bundle comprises a reel 2 to which is attached by way of a pivoted spring bonded arm 11 a tension roller 9 and a pair of circumferentially spaced guide frames 5 each having a groove of width similar to that of the individual fibre diameter. Guide rollers 3 are also mounted on the reel 2. In use a fibre 6 is fed on to the rotating reed from a supply drum 7 so that successive turns are superimposed in the grooves of the frames 5, then, cement or glue is applied over the area 20. The fibre unit thus produced is placed along with other such units in a channel shaped member, the units cemented together and the secured areas 20 severed and opened out to form the required bundle. In one embodiment tension members 23 are provided on the reel 2 to assist in rotating the fibre 6 in the grooves.
