Abstract
1471170 Gas blast switches ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 23 Dec 1974 [9 Jan 1974] 55379/74 Heading H1N In an electrical switch having contacts in an electronegative gas within a switch housing for arc suppression, the gas is at a pressure of from 0-20 p.s.i.g., so that heaters are not required to prevent liquification of the gas in the range of ambient temperatures normally experienced by the switch, and the gas stream is directed axially of the contacts via an aperture centrally located within one of the contacts. In the switch described which is of the puffer type the contacts 48, 51 are in a casing 52 within a main housing 45, both casing and housing being filled with sulphur hexafluoride and being in communication by hole 52a. One contact 48 is fixed and is connected directly to a terminal 47 through a bushing 36 and the other contact 51 is movable and is connected to a further terminal 47<SP>1</SP> through a bushing 36<SP>1</SP> and a flexible cable 70. Associated with the moving contact is a conical piston 58 which moves within the casing 52 to cause a gas blast. A valve 80 regulates entry of gas into the casing 52 behind the conical piston 58.
